Vivekachudamani 218

ghatodake bimbitamarkabimba- 

malokya mudho ravimeva manyate | 

tatha cidabhasamupadhisamstham 

bhrantyahamityeva jado'bhimanyate 

(Sankaracarya's Vivekachudamani 218) 

The ignorant, on seeing the reflection of the sun in the water in a jar, consider it to be the sun itself. So too, the ignorant through delusion identifies himself with the reflection of the consciousness appearing in the intellect and considers it to be the 'I' his own Self. 

Who am I? The answer is I am a soul, not the body. One has to come to this simple understanding that we are souls. The ignorant people see the sun in a pond or lake as the sun itself but it is just a reflection. Similarly to see the material body as 'i' is completely ignorant. We have to come to the platform to understand that this body will perish any moment but the soul will remain alive. So the 'i' is not the perishable body but it is indicating the soul.

Orang yang bodoh, ketika melihat pantulan matahari di air dalam sebuah wadah, menganggapnya sebagai matahari itu sendiri. Demikian juga, orang yang bodoh melalui khayalan mengidentifikasikan dirinya dengan cerminan dari kesadaran yang muncul dalam intelek dan menganggapnya sebagai 'Aku' sendiri.

Siapa saya? Jawabannya adalah saya adalah jiwa, bukan tubuh. Kita harus sampai pada pemahaman sederhana ini bahwa kita adalah jiwa. Orang-orang bodoh melihat matahari di kolam atau danau sebagai matahari itu sendiri tetapi itu hanya refleksi. Demikian pula untuk melihat tubuh material sebagai 'i' benar-benar bodoh. Kita harus datang ke peron untuk memahami bahwa tubuh ini akan binasa setiap saat tetapi jiwa akan tetap hidup. Jadi 'i' bukanlah tubuh yang fana tetapi mengindikasikan jiwa.

அறிவற்றவர்கள், ஒரு குடுவையில் தண்ணீரில் சூரியனின் பிரதிபலிப்பைக் கண்டதும், அது சூரியனே என்று கருதுகின்றனர். அவ்வாறே, மாயையின் மூலம் அறியாதவர் புத்தியில் தோன்றும் நனவின் பிரதிபலிப்புடன் தன்னை அடையாளப்படுத்தி, அதை 'நான்' தனது சொந்த சுயமாக கருதுகிறார்.

நான் யார்? பதில் நான் ஒரு ஆத்மா, உடல் அல்ல. நாம் ஆத்மாக்கள் என்ற இந்த எளிய புரிதலுக்கு ஒருவர் வர வேண்டும். அறிவற்ற மக்கள் சூரியனை ஒரு குளத்திலோ அல்லது ஏரியிலோ சூரியனாகவே பார்க்கிறார்கள், ஆனால் அது ஒரு பிரதிபலிப்பு மட்டுமே. அதேபோல் பொருள் உடலை 'நான்' என்று பார்ப்பது முற்றிலும் அறியாமை. இந்த உடல் எந்த தருணத்திலும் அழிந்துவிடும், ஆனால் ஆன்மா உயிருடன் இருக்கும் என்பதை புரிந்து கொள்ள நாம் மேடைக்கு வர வேண்டும். எனவே 'நான்' என்பது அழிந்துபோகக்கூடிய உடல் அல்ல, ஆனால் அது ஆன்மாவை குறிக்கிறது.
