Sankaracarya's Vivekachudamani 459
तद्वत्परे ब्रह्मणि वर्तमानः
सदात्मना तिष्ठति नान्यदीक्षते ।
स्मृतिर्यथा स्वप्नविलोकितार्थे
तथा विदः प्राशनमोचनादौ ॥
tadvatpare brahmaṇi vartamānaḥ
sadātmanā tiṣṭhati nānyadīkṣate |
smṛtiryathā svapnavilokitārthe
tathā vidaḥ prāśanamocanādau ||
(Sankaracarya's Vivekachudamani 459)
Even so, the sage abiding in Eternal Reality in the form of the true Self does not perceive anything else. Just as one recollects the objects in the dream, the Realized one remembers his day-to-day acts of eating, releasing etc.
The great souls such as sages, pure devotees who perform austerities by understanding the Supreme truth never hanker for material benefits accept serving the Lotus Feet of the Lord. Their prime motive is to understand that we are not the bodies and we are simply the servant of the Lord. In this sloka Sripad Sankaracarya giving an example such as a person who dreams about material benefits, he doesn't get anything in real-life except the remembrance of the dream. One has to move day to day life by eating, realizing, sleeping and etc. Material dreams will end with nothing but spiritual realization will take one near the creator. Such a person who realizes this is a rare soul.
