Tirupati Mahatyam 3

A mud pot is more pleasing to the Lord than a gold vessel

About seven miles from Venkatachalam, there was a village named Gudwakkam. There lived a potter named Bhima. Tamalini was his wife. They were very poor. They lived on their poor earnings. Both of them were great devotees of the Lord Venkateswara.

Even while he was toning the mud for making pots, for each of his steps pressed over the mud, the name of the Lord was on his lips. He knew only two things - one was to mind his work and the other was to sing the hymns of the Lord - Nothing else was known to him.

Bhima made a throne of mud and also a deity of the Lord in mud and worshipped the Lord with flowers ansl made of mud. He oftern got himself immersed in the worship of the Lord and however, his work went on unhindered.

PLease with his sincere devotion, the Lord once gave him darshan and said, "Bhima, my dear devotee, I appreciate your sincere devotion towards me. Hence I grant you this boon. In my temple all the Naivedhya(offering) offered to me will be prepared only in mud pots." He then sent the couple on Pushpaka Vimana to heaven.

According to that boon, the Naivedhyas offered to Lord Venkateswara are prepared only in mud pots, ever since that day.
