Tirupati Mahatyam 4

The Lord accepts Chappals offered by a devotee

Long ago,in a Harijan colony near Tirupati, there lived a great devotee named Chinna. He used to stitch chappals, sell them and with the money thus got purchase puja materials and worship the Lord.

After some days, he thought that he could stitch chappals for the Lord himself. So he gathered all the materials required and set at work. But he was not sure as to what size he should make the chappals. So he took a white bed sheet, placed it before a picture of the Lord, spread rice flour on the bed sheet and spent the whole night in prayers.

The Lord appeciated his Bhakti and placed his feet on the floor spread  there and made foot prints. Chinna woke up and saw those foot prints. His joy knew no bounds. He immediately stitched  chappals of that size.

He worshipped the chappals placing some flowers on them and carried it on his head for presentation to the Lord. While he was trying to climb the hills from Alipiri side, he was stopped by chaste Hindus, who felt that the entire route would become impure if that untouchable is allowed to pass that way. He was pushed down with sticks.

Addressing the Lord as "Apthabandhu" Chinna was about to fall down. The Lord appeared before him and saved him. He wore the chappals on his feet. Those chappals glittered like the lightening from the clouds. Chinna praised the Lord, overjoyed at His presence. The Lord blessed Chinna and said, "You will soon gain Mukthi. I will wear these chappals on my way to Mangapuram at midnight everyday where I meet my consort Padmavati and on my return at day break I will leave them at Alipiri before I arrive Ananda Nilayam. And all my Bhakthas after getting their heads tonsured touch there chappals with their heads and offer pujas." Thus blessing Chinna, the Lord disappeared.

People who witnessed this, constructed a mandir there. Even today people touch those chappals with their heads after head tonsure and perform pujas. Those chappals are kept at Alipiri.
