Tirupathi Sri Venketeswara Story and Mahatyam Part 33

Padmavathi's marriage with Srinivasa

The marriage was scheduled at sunrise. The time was fast approaching. Vasista maharishi sent for Dharani Devi and Akasa Raju. They came and performed pada puja to Srinivasa using milk, rose water, sandal paste, flowers, rice coated with saffron, camphor and scented incenses.

Srinivasa was then seated on a palanquin decorated with pearls. Arathi was done. He was then carried frim his cottage to the Kalyana mantap and was seated on a plank decorated with diamonds.

Then while Vasista, Brihaspati and Brahma chanted vedas, Dharani Devi brought Padmavathi holding her hand and made her sit next to Srinivasa. Akasa Raju held Padmavati's hand and while Dharani Devi was dropping water from a gold vessel he made those waters pass from his palm into Srinivasa's palm through Padmavati's plan to mark the kanyadhan.

Vasista tied the kankanam (a yellow rope tied round the wrist to mark the solemnity of the occasion) to Srinivasa and Padmavathi. While Sumangala were singing and stretching jyothis and offering aratis, Srinivasa tied the mangala Sutra around Padmavathi's neck. Brahma, Maheswara and other devas sprinkled saffron coated rice over the couple as a mark of blessing.

Saraswathi and parvathi gave them the mangala arathi, Gandarvas showered flowers from the sky. Thus the marriage of Padmavathi with Srinivasa was celebrated on a grand scale to the content of all.

Vakuladevi was very much overwhelmed and shed tears of joy and blessed the couple heartily.
