Sankaracarya's Vivekachudamani 563

अविनाशी वा अरेऽयमात्मेति श्रुतिरात्मनः ।
प्रब्रवीत्यविनाशित्वं विनश्यत्सु विकारिषु ॥

avināśī vā are'yamātmeti śrutirātmanaḥ |
prabravītyavināśitvaṃ vinaśyatsu vikāriṣu ||
(Sankaracarya's Vivekachudamani 563)

"Immortal is this Self (Atman), my dear"---this passage from the scriptures speaks of the Immortal in the midst of things finite and subject to modification.

Atma or soul which keeps our body alive is a divine being and there is no death for the soul. This is because the soul is a minute spark from the Supreme Lord. It has the quality of the Supreme Lord but the Lord is quantitatively different from us. The eternal place for the soul is not this earth but it's should be with the Lord. Therefore the soul is suffering in the body which doesn't belong to it. It's our duty to follow the scriptures to bring the soul back to the Lord by using the body given to us as an instrument.
