Marjara Kesari Temple

The Sri Narasingha Nath Temple is unique in that it worships Lord Narasimha as Marjara Kesari, who has a cat-like head. The temple is located in the picturesque foothills of the Gandhamardana Parvata in Odisha.

The temple's presiding deity is Lord Narasingha, an avatar of Lord Vishnu with a cat-like head. The deity is made of black chlorite stone.

The temple is known for its unparalleled legacy, splendid Kalinga-style architecture, caves, lush green forests, perennial streams, pristine surroundings, and scenic waterfalls. It is nestled in Paikamal village in the Bargarh district in western Odisha, India.

Sthala Purana of the Sri Nrusinghanath Temple

In ancient times, a daitya named Musika tormented the people of the region. Distressed by his tyranny, the villagers prayed to Lord Sri Rama for relief from the demon’s oppression while he was in vanavasa (exile). Musika had performed intense tapasya (austerities) to Lord Shiva and obtained a boon that he could only be killed by Lord Narasimha. To defeat Musika, Lord Rama assumed the form of Narasimha and attacked the demon. Fearing for his life, Musika transformed into a mouse and hid in the caves of Gandhamadhana Parvata.

To capture Musika, the Lord took the form of a cat. This unique manifestation, combining the features of a cat and a lion, came to be known as Marjara Kesari.

The demon pleaded for mercy as he sought refuge in Gandhamadana Parvata. The Lord granted his request and spared him. It is believed that the Lord continues to guard the sacred hill from the demon to this day.

The architecture of the Sri Nrusinghanath Temple.  The temple is a classic example of the Kalinga Deula architectural style that dominates the Odisha region. Its design features the bada (base), gandi (tower), and mastaka (crown).

Built in the 14th century, this Vaishnavite temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is an example of the Kalinga architectural style. King Baijal Singh Dev, a ruler of the Chauhan Rajput clan from the Patnagarh Kingdom, laid the foundation in 1313 CE.
