Underground temple discovered in Srisailam

SRISAILAM: Endowment officials have discovered an ancient 'mandap' used for meditation in the Srisailam temple complex here. The mandap was found beneath Srisaila Jagadguru Peetham. It is believed that saints used the underground mandap for meditation and solitary prayers.

A team of archeology officials will visit the temple complex soon to find out the archaeological and historical importance of the mandap, besides determining its exact age.

The temple authorities took up development works worth Rs 40 crore besides the temple of Goddess Brahmarambika in the main temple complex. While workers were busy excavating the earth, they noticed a tunnel-like structure and immediately they alerted the temple authorities. Temple executive officer Chandrasekhar Azad and local police inspector Nageswara Rao inspected the mandap. Later a panchanama was conducted.

Azad told news that the mandap measures seven feet in length and 10 feet in breadth. It is made of stone. Hundreds of people gathered at the site to have a look at the mandap as word about its discovery spread in the temple town.
