Sri Agneeswarar temple

Lord of the temple is praised by Saint Gnanasambandar in his Thevaram hymns. This is the 115th Shiva temple on the southern bank of Cauvery praised in Thevaram hymns

Lord Shiva is Swayambumurthy in the temple. Traditionally, Navagrahas in Shiva temples do not look at each other but in different directions. It is noteworthy that they are in the form of the letter PA in Tamil thus facing one another. Lord Muruga graces here with a bow as Danus Subramania – Danus in Sanskrit means bow. Sani Bhagwan in the temple is holding a plough as if respecting the dignity of labour

Lord is swayambumurthy in the temple. Navagrahas, against tradition, are facing one another in this temple. Lord Muruga is praised as Danus Subramania with a bow in His hand. Planet Sani Bhagwan is holding a plough in his hand indicating the dignity of labour

Those afflicted by adverse Saturn aspects pray to Lord Agneeswarar and also Sani Bhagwan for relief.

Devotees perform Abhishek to Lord and offer vastras

Lord Shiva is praised as Agneeswarar as Agni Bhagwan worshipped Lord in this temple for relief from a curse. It is noteworthy that the Sani Bhagwan shrine is close to the shrine of Mother Mahalakshmi. The temple has three sacred trees Vanni, Oomathai and Kondrai representing wealth, removal of mental agony and unity in family respectively. The nine planets are facing one another against the traditional form of facing different opposite directions. As Lord directly destroys the sins of His devotees, the Navagrahas have less work, they are in a face-to-face position, it is said.

Sani Bhagwan appears with a plough in hand as if indicating the dignity of labour. Devotees pray to him all the days including the usual Saturdays. They perform Archana with Vanni leaves for favourable results. It is noteworthy that the temple is facing west which belongs to Saturn in the zodiac circle. Devotees throng the temple for relief from Saturn's adverse effects

If Saturn is unfavourable to anyone or at certain times of his transition, it is not the fault of the planet. It should be understood that his place in the janma patrika – horoscope-of an individual or in the case of even celestial, is decided by the wrong and good doings of those concerned leading to results accordingly. He also pours immense benefits to many and punishes many based on this rule. But everyone is afraid of his adverse aspects only and fails to praise the benefits they derive from him. Grieved by the attitude of people, Saturn came to this Agni Vanam as advised by Sage Vasishta and performed severe penance. Lord Shiva granted darshan to Sani Bhagwan in the form of Agni the Fire and made him Pongu Sani-Prosperous Sani. He also granted the boon to all that those worshipping Him and Sani together will be happy. As blessed by the Lord, Sani Bhagwan has his shrine in the temple in the Kubera corner (north) granting all wealth to devotees. During such a Saturn period, Emperor Nala lost all his wealth and kingdom. After the period was over, he came to this place and worshipped Pongu Sani-prosperous Sani and got back all that he lost earlier, according to the scriptures.
