One inhale and exhale is called as one cycle for respiration. So Pranadeva chants Hamsanamaka paramaatma and gives n number of respirations in a life span of a person. The life span is measured in terms of a number of respiration cycles ie, one inhale and one exhale. So that, " n" number of respiration can be used by a person say for 60 years or 70 years, etc depending on how fast he utilizes all the respirations.

So more we control the breathe more we can extend that respiration for still more years. That is why PRANAYAMA must be compulsorily practiced during Sandhyavandanam.

The faster we breathe lesser the life span. This is because we are utilizing the respiration faster and faster. The respiration cycle gets over soon, in limited years, in case if we are not able to control our breathing.
