The Art and Science of Vaastu

Ideally, designers and builders attempt to create structures that promote a feeling of contentment when occupying them. Ever since humans began looking for a warm, dry cave, this quest for excellent shelter has been evolving. We all know from experience the difference between a pleasant and unpleasant shelter. Some buildings just drive us away and some nurture and calm us.

When we consider the elements that create a good experience in a building, we usually think in terms of gross elements like spaciousness, light, comfort, beauty, coherent organization. We want the building to shelter us from the gross uncomfortable influences of nature. But, nature’s influences are also subtle. In Vaastu architecture, we consider the subtle natural influences as well as the gross. The vaastu structure makes it possible to live in harmony with the underlying energies of the natural world and the elemental energies of earth, air, fire, water, and space.

Vaastu Science maintains that every structure of the universe, on all levels is a conscious, living light-sound form. It goes deep into the mechanics of the subtle manifesting energies of Nature’s universe. Energy and matter are in a constant dance of transformation. This transformation occurs in prescribed mathematic and geometric formulas. The Vaastu designer uses these formulas found deep within all life structures to create images, dance movements, music, poetry, and buildings that are effulgent with energized consciousness.

In a very potent way, these forms resonate with the vital life energy underlying all existence and emanate that energy or consciousness, making it readily accessible. Vaastu structures are like tuning forks for life energy: as we live, for one reason or another, we fall out of resonance with life energy. The Vaastu structure, through its resonance with the cosmic energy matrix, brings us back into alignment with Source energy. This accessibility to powerful nature energies that promotes all vitality and creativity in life is the main focus of this science.

How is this accessibility achieved?

Every object generates wave patterns. In other words, every object vibrates. The cup in your kitchen cupboard is vibrating in a wave pattern and so it the chair in which you are sitting right now, as well as the entire structure you call your home. The configuration of these structures sets up a relationship with cosmic energy geometries. Take a moment to be still and sense the vibration, or “feeling”, of the house.

In Vaastu Architecture, we use a primal “pattern”, or formula, of energy transforming into vibrating matter. When we place this pattern, or mandala, on the earth in the form of an enclosed structure, it becomes a living organism with a particular wave pattern or vibration.

This mandala, called Vastu Purusha Mandala, is a primal pattern of the universe. We use this pattern as the basis of the building form and the structure generates a peace or stillness, due to harmonic resonance with the subtle energy matrix of the universe.

Resonance with cosmic energies, subtle and gross, is achieved by aligning the structural elements of the building (walls, columns, windows, doors) with the mandala. The building is also aligned to resonate positively with the astronomical influences exerting on the structure and the people living within it. It is this resonance that gives the building its healing, life enhancing properties. The building vibrates in a sea of nature energies and nourishes the occupants.

Vaastu Science postulates we are vaastu structures. By living in the proximity of the pure expressions of this science, we are able to tune our nervous system to vital universal energies. Deep within us is a seed of life, a vibrant vaastu structure. As we live, our nervous systems begin to lose resonance with this life seed vibration. Vaastu creations: building structures, sacred sculptures, healing music and dance forms, reverse this process and enhance our resonance with universal life energy.

Everyone experiences being energized and uplifted by an expression of nature: a sunset, a moonrise, a whale surging through the ocean. Life is enhanced, through joyful energy, by coming into relationship with the nature. At these moments we resonate with the nature energy we are experiencing. Our inner life energy ignites in recognition of the beauty that we also are. The vaastu forms influence us in this way, but on a very deep level of truth of universal consciousness.

My teacher, Dr. V. Ganapati Sthapati of Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu, one of India’s most renowned exponents of Vaastu Science, put it this way:

“In the heart cave of the body, there is inner space and in that inner-space there is the vibrant thread of consciousness. It is this thread of consciousness that functions as the string of the sarira-vina (bodily instrument).”

“The structure of the vaastu inspired building vibrates with cosmic energy and the bodily instrument resonates with this vibration.”

Resonance with life means love of life. Loving life generates a personal pattern of health and prosperity on all levels. This is the simple goal of Vaastu Science.
