Gurukula

śrī-nārada uvāca
brahmacārī guru-kule
vasan dānto guror hitam
ācaran dāsavan nīco
gurau sudṛḍha-sauhṛdaḥ (Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 7.12.1)

Nārada Muni said: A student should practice completely controlling his senses. He should be submissive and should have an attitude of firm friendship for the spiritual master. With a great vow, the brahmacārī should live at the guru-kula, only for the benefit of the guru.

The whole material creation is moving under the principle of sex life. In modern civilization, sex life is the focal point for all activities. (SB 1.1.1)

One cannot enter into the kingdom of God unless one is perfectly cleared of all sins. The material sins are products of our desires to lord it over material nature. It is very difficult to get rid of such desires. Women and wealth are very difficult problems for the devotee making progress on the path back to Godhead. Many stalwarts in the devotional line fell victim to these allurements and thus retreated from the path of liberation. But when one is helped by the Lord Himself, the whole process becomes as easy as anything by the divine grace of the Lord.

Before entering household life, one should be trained as a brahmacari, living under the care of the guru, whose place is known as the gurukula. Brahmacari guru-kule vasan danto guror hitam (SB 7.12.1). From the beginning, a brahmacari is trained to sacrifice everything for the benefit of the guru. A brahmacari is advised to go begging alms door to door ithose days, addressing all women as mother, and whatever he collects goes to the benefit of the guru.

In this way, he learns how to control his senses and sacrifice everything for the guru. When he is fully trained, if he likes he is allowed to marry. Thus he is not an ordinary house holder who has learned only how to satisfy his senses. Children should be taught from the very beginning of life to be first class brahmacaris. Then it will be possible for them to fully surrender to the Lord in the future.
